caballos malos sino malos jinetes.
sensibilidad, etc. Intento ganarme su confianza logrando acercarme próximamente
a él, acariciarlo, agarrarlo.
To be tame a horse must be physically fit, well fed, with no injuries, for just as kids these define a basic floor to develop their potential.
The colt is trained from birth by his mother, who teaches him/ her how life is in their family group or herd. Their basic education is given by the natural order. The first contact with man is through and with the mother when they are fed. The foals are curious beings and one must use that feature to gently start gaining their trust.
Horses are wild and herbivorous animals of herd nature, that instinctively defend themselves with their legs, hands and mouth. The back, right where we ride, is its most defenseless spote. We must therefore establish a link with which they realize we are not predators but someone you can trust. Therefore I do not think bad horses but bad riders.
In general, when the horse is not mine and I bring him/her for taming at 3 or 4 years, firstly taking it to a quiet place and watch him/her. Seeking to understand him/ her, identifying his/her style, needs, group behavior or alone attitude, sensitivity, etc.. I try to earn him/her trust making close approach, caress and grabbing him/her. Generally, I work on herds of young horses for taming, as a school is divided in different courses depending on their education level, I try to give them room to grow with their peers, trying to locate me in the place of the supporter, in whom they place their trust and address learning, not letting this function for another horse. The idea is to overcome mutual fears after a bond of trust.
I star taming using a bosal and unused "bridon" just placed so it does not cause discomfort to the mouth and I slowly start introducing it latter. I ride them directly onto the saddle, but it can be also useful a "recado" or old saddle for practical purposes in the first stage of adaptation during active rest, as often happens to react trying to get rid of it even breaking it, this being more expensive if we use an original polo saddle for example. I teach them all the signs from the below first, to turn, stop, rewind, generally use a rope pulley style, to go introducing them in the feeling of something on them, which it is moved or pressed onto them. All that is taught below, then taught above. Turning it starts with a baker style gradually getting used to playing for the mutual motions.
I work at any stage because it is important that the horse works well regardless of space, a riding arena or round pen is useful to tighten it only if necessary, but it must be located on the field to see your response out of the containment barriers.
The work is individual, each horse has its own personality, physical state, etc., that's why i give their personal time, calling them by their name, and now by inviting them to work one can sense its condition and predisposition to work that particular day. Pay close attention to the routines of work and rest intervals. Saturation or pressure only leads to bad port. I think it is essential to increase gradually the work together with a gradual increase of the rest as well. There are active rests where they are taught without the need to be present, are especially useful at the beginning and end of the dressage as it discovers the automatic response of the horse. There is also the resting passive means total relaxation, no more physical pain or resentment, is a space to stay in intact shape.
Horses learn so you should not over demand them but feel them to see that you are asked by them. Toward the end of the taming process one is dedicated to the finishing touches but we have a horse that knows how to work. The long rest that follows should not inspire fear of losing what has been achieved because the horse does not forget. The return will be a progressive work process of reviewing the previous lessons, interspersed with practice and rest. Then starting with the specific work of its discipline.
The work of the horse trainer is to be felt by the horse, that is his/her medium of instruction. It is therefore crucial the mutual trust in this couple. From the top 10 gallops, it begins a stage of development and teaching of new things or reviewing others. It is unacceptable that a horse, even more a polo horse, does not know how to change hands with her/his body, or stop it or turn at a time. These mistakes limit the responsiveness of the horse and with it the possibility to feel the rider.
So a good pilot should be able to pass the horse when possible to other pilots, since the purpose of taming is to be a good horse beyond who rides him/her. On the other hand, a good pilot can handle and correct the defects that may occur. A good rider is the one who drives the horse with his body and legs, moving both naturally and absolute unity.
The spurs, whip, a martingale or riendillas are instruments of support, but these should only be used to correct or encourage when the horse deserves it not as elements of intimidation. The trainer is their companion not their master or foe. A good tamer first know his/her limitations and build the learning from that base.
Taming can be directed while reinforcing the necessary details for each discipline you can do a taming base that ensures a good horse to ride. In this sense, it seems essential to me that the horses develop in the environment of their discipline.
In horse race, one walks the floor first, looking his/her to understand what is a trot, or run a long or short. After working on the position the hands in elbows, how to coordinate your cardio-respiratory system, keep your head down, pushing with their feet the longest jump of greater push, activating all muscle.
For a jumping horse is necessary to go over fences, ponds and ditches, to lose fear and is always willing to go forward. Then it is important the finest work of training to be a neat horse, who knows putting hands and feet, who understands what is croup in, out, change of pace, trot and gallop in place and long, etc.
When one teaches a horse to play polo, one must play for him/her not to oneself. At the end of the taming, the horse knew what a mallet was, to start with a specific instruction from polo we start showing the basic movements of the stick and the ball. I work slowly after a galloping stride, knowing the court from the fringes to the interior. If there are other horses or cows I also work with them slowly showing what to take is. Every time the complexity of the activity and strategies are increased, in basic stick and ball, then giving a one to one, increasing in a tighter demand at practices, it takes five or six months for a horse playing polo. The horse becomes a player with the experience of the seasons. I think that just after 3 or 4 seasons played, it can be called a player horse, but this is very singular to each horse, depending on their physical, practice, attitude, etc., One day you end a game and the horse just showed you his/her roof or that he/ her is a crack.
