Comprendiendo a tu caballo- Understanding your horse

Horses are like children, they gradually learn but they are as sponges, absorbing everything you teach. They are very sensitive beings, this nature will make them permeable for good and evil. They are innocent even after its size and powerful appearance, they are more like a naughty 4 or 5 years child than beast. The touching, cuddling, and playing with them are ways of gaining their trust. For I believe that the best horse is the one that is understood by its rider. The horses never forget what they learn, that's why at the end of the taming process we must let them go to rest at least 6 months. I say at least because I think the longer the better. In my experience, I have given up to 9 months of rest and the horse came as effective as when released. Now there's something other times not seen as so important, but due to some bad experiences with some lessons, I think we should highlight is that the work around the horses should not be rushed or crowded so as not to cause any injuries. On the contrary, it should be brought in little by little, with a steady and progressive rate with a time of not less than 2 weeks of work just to pace, gradually adding intensity.

Taming is creating bounds

"Taming is to create bounds."
Life has taught me that children and animals have more free and pure hearts, and therefore also treasure the best lessons that we must never loose, keeping our inner child with skin-deep.In my method of taming, I attempt not to loose that legacy led to the Antoine de Saint Exupery's Little Prince. For by the domestication of each other we become unique, but even more responsible to each other. We go from simple strangers to be need of each other. That is a simple fact not to be forgotten, that we are connected to each other forever, keeping that in mind is important when riding where we are only two facing the world, we are two companions who depend on one another, none is submitted to the other, because the meeting is expected by both and based on something more deep than the practical task.
That's when riding becomes an art.

Jugando aprendemos mejor

Donald Winnicott

"Only it's in the game and playing where the child or adult as individuals are able to be creative and use their entire personality and only by being creative the individual discovers himself."

Primeros Acercamientos

The primary contact with the  newborn foals must be progressive and set with mother and child, feeding them with fresh sweets as an apple for example. The foal is curious and by curiosity we lean on to take him at  his on will and reach us. The bond between him and the protective mother it's not interfere, thus the mother would and accompanies it. Then, natural approach is expected and so we can establish contact with strokes and progressive awards, showing deep caress, which settles the basis for confidence to build our art together. It is seeked to provide a pasive leadership the similar to the protectress mare role inside a herd, who leads it with a matriarchal authority, exercised from the protection and satisfaction of needs and not from violence such as the authority of the stallion. A bond spring from love is even more enduring and of unwavering obedience than one surged from submission.

My tame is general but is usually directed to the ultimate goal of work of the horse which makes easer the further process. For a polo pony one looks primarily not to experience fear. If a young colt is not afraid it will not be either when he is a mature horse on the polo field. That's why from the beginning that I grab it and start taming I do so with the idea that it will be a polo pony. I effort to satisfy their needs while improving the handling  and attitude characteristics that will make a great polo pony. It is important in this process to leave room to the development of their potentials and personality, thus its personal touch. I seek not to homogenize them but only to guide them in learning how to make the best of them for any discipline.I start by teaching the gaits in a free job where they consolidate their movements and cues. Just after 10 or 20 gallops I introduce the thin work in round, changed of hands, etc.Regarding the control and reduction of fear, I work without whip or with very limited use of this. I always work at open field near the herd. It is essential the use of my body, playing with them, standing up, kneeled or lied down, hanged from branches, etc., when I pass the stick this is just another movement, always with the assurance that they will not be damaged.

Perder miedo al jinete

"Doma pronto y usa tarde” Proverbio árabe

"Tame early and use later" Arabian Proverb

The essential thing to make a good horse is confidence. It is important to identify with them, reaching a state of harmony and communication as to make horse and rider one.
Horses are observer animals who love the patience and perseverance. Consistent with this, we should try to be a reflection of those attractive attributes. The first instrument to understand them is the close observation, long hours watching them and feeling them.
In this sense, it is useful the understanding of their basic forms of behavior and organization, as they are wild animals they are guided by the force of their ancestral instinct that runs through his veins. In nature, the predator attacks from the back where the possible defenses for a horse are muted, say, their feet with strong kicks and mouth of fatal bite. Moreover, the birds stand on its back to feed on their parasites and lice that plague them, identifying its presence as a benefit. Our goal should be to position us as a benefit and not as danger, through caresses, cleanliness and good nutrition, it is essential to use of rewards or reinforcements for the right answer, I usually use incentives such as oats or corn.
The horse that stops or shoots is not a bad horse, but a horse with fear and mistrust that only shows the failure of the man over him. Given this situation we should not change horses but consider change as a rider. The horse learns by association, so the vices and bad habits are always inculcated by abuse or poor education of man, either because unleashes defenses for feeling attacked, like shooting or buck, or in the second case, by setting a bad rider who does not know how to fold correctly and it does turn bad, which leads to an associated problem that has never been corrected because it was taught in this way.
It's also crucial the site of playing in this process, for it is not all work, they must also have space for recreation and enhancement of the link. That's why when I work with young horses I often use exercises like lay, kneel and stand on his back. Thus, establishing the largest possible contact between us in a relaxing atmosphere, while we can exercise balance and flexibility as riders, especially interesting in the handling of polo. Also running beside them, making circuits in an equal relationship, to set special calls between us and whistles, expanding their vocabulary at the same time, strengthen the bond, fostering a mutual emotional balance. I believe that our aspiration should aim to break the prevailing materialism in our field and start treating the horse as a partner rather than a mere profitable instrument or weekend property.

1. Before riding a horse and tring to dominate it, you should learn to control yourself.
2. Before pretending to "teach" you should "learn". Humility is a virtue in horsemanship. Which is learned through constant updating on theories and techniques, but especially through experience with our colleagues.
3. No need to submit if not convince the horse.
4. The basic fear to being attack, to the unknown, is present in all nature. It exists within the nature of the horse. As also exists in human nature and we must be conscious so as not to turn against our art.
5. Give clear rules to make the horse understand the concept of good and evil by means of a modeling  behavior
system based on positive and negative reinforcers.
• Reward or prize, is given explicitly and immediately after the conduct, keeping the desired answer. These can be by careness, a flatter voice, snacks, or rest in the box or return to the herd.
• Correction: correct and order without violence and brutality, prompting a repetition of the exercise by removing the unwanted behavior.
6. La whip and spurs are supporting elements to aid remedies, when wrong answers  and aggressive
are generated, to strengthen a command not understood. They aren't elements of punishment. Who punishes his horse demonstrates his inability and helplessness at work.
7.The horse do not see his rider, it feels and hears him. A good jockey must know how to perceive his horse, learn to observe, listen and feel. For the construction of a necessary connection between the rider and the horse, is based on this type of communication. The harmony of this relationship is something that should not be given but must be naturally
built. It is the mutual understanding between two beings and that, as with people, it's not always given, so if you can not "talk" to a particular horse does not get discouraged, try another.
8. It must be taken into account that the horse memorizes all the actions of the rider, thus confirm or contradict the previous tame.
9. Always protect the horse's joy, freshness and personality.
10. Horse- riding in any of its disciplines, is to interact with another living being, with a harmless animal, if man has not done it aggressive, that often responds according to how we've treat it. We must realize that this animal depends on us, that their welfare will always be linked to the treatment and care we give.
